Music Video Production Assessment Book

Task 1 (a): write a critical evaluation of the purpose of music videos, with examples.

1: Linkin Park-New Divide, this music video is promoting the Transformers two movie and it is also the films official sound track. The video uses a mix of effects merged with normal images and clips from the actual film. Its a good songs backed up by a good music video which also uses good visual effects, however the song has nothing to do with the video of the new transformer movie.

2: Rock star-Nickleback, this video and song is about how it would feel like to be a famous rock star. The video shows a number of different normal people and celebrities in different locations lip syncing the artist’s song. It is a good and catchy song also smart use of different people in different places, however not everyone enjoys rock music this may be a negative.

3: Sneakbo-The Wave, this song is a club anthem/dance tune and the song is about a new dance craze. There is a numerous amount of clips some show the artist in a club with dancing women which is the main reason to the song and why it relates to the video. There is a good use of effects in the video and also scenery which relates well to the song. But the artist uses allot of slang which many people may find difficult to understand.

4: Tupac-Dear Mama the artist raps about his childhood relationship with his mother. The video shows a very effective story which goes with the song very well. A good point to this video is that the song goes very well with the video a bad point is the video shows some abusive and violent scenes which people may not like seeing.

5: Daddy y Yankee-Lo que paso paso, the song is about a couple who have had a huge argument and have broken up over it but then make up at the end of the video. This is a Columbian dance song, the video shows people dancing and also clips of the couple arguing and making up. The music and beat is perfect for dancing to and also the song goes with most of the clips but some of the lyrics do not go with the theme of the song or the video.

Task 1 (b): critically evaluate the styles and conventions of music videos, with examples.

1: Ed Sheeran-Lego house
This music video has a very narrative story line which goes very well with the music that is displayed on the video. The video shows a famous actor playing a character which is obsessed with Ed Sheeran. the actor in the video dresses exactly the same as Ed Sheeran and also looks like him. The video matches the song very well and goes with the style of music.

2: Immortal Technique-Dance with the devil
This is a song which has a music video that actually describes the lyrics perfectly. The artist is singing about a young man who’s mind was corrupted by the desire and greed of having money and women etc, the video also shows the lengths that the young man would go to in order to chase his dream. The artist does not actually appear in the video and there is only four people displayed on it. It’s a very sad song and the video works very well with the theme of it.

3: Chase and status-Let you go
This video also has a narrative outlook to the video; it displays a hypocrite Jeremy Kyle like talk show host. He judges people oh his talk show then goes and actually does what these people he is criticising and judging them about. Although the video is very well done and good to watch the video does not go with the new dub step genre music. So the music does not particularly go with the song but that does not deny the fact that both the video and the song is very good.

4:Nate dog ft Warren G-Regulate
Regulate is a song about a man going to meet his friend but then gets robbed for his jewellery and car then lets his friend know and they go looking for the robbers. The video is very well produced and gets both the point of the song and of the video across very well. The song linked brilliantly with the music video and I really enjoy listening to the song and watching the music video.

5: Afro man-Because I got high
This is a reasonably narrative music video but not completely some of the images and scenes used in the video are very random and don’t have any relation to the actual song. But song is very catchy and the video is comical along with the song which is also very funny and comical.

Task 2: Plan with creativity and flair a music video using found and original footage.

Title of Music Track/ Artist:

So Solid Crew – Broken Silence

Write a description of your music video concept:

My music video is going to be a typical revenge narrative video. The storyline will consist of a group of friends loosing one of their closest friends to knife crime due to illegal drug dealing. There are going to be flash backs to when the group used to hang out with their late friend. Then there is going to be another gathering when the main character of the video will be presented with a gun by one of his group members. He goes to take revenge but he decides he will be just as bad as the killer if he does and he does not want to sink to the killers level.

Explain how you are going to use and combine:

a)    original footage you have filmed yourself

I am going to be using a mixture of gritty free hand filming and also using for steady shots a tripod. I’m going to use numerous amounts of different camera angles to keep people interested in the different shots and scenes. I’m also going to be using different scenery for each scene, e.g. outside a park, a block of flats etc.

b)    library footage (include the source/s)

I am going to be using a song from YouTube called Broken Silence by So Solid Crew. I won’t be using the video but I will be taking the audio from it to include on my music video.

c)    Graphics (say how you are going to generate these)

I am going to put the name of the song and the music video at the end of the music video. I am also going to include end credits, which will include all the names of people, which helped and acted in my picture. I want the colour to be black and white for the credits and the name, I also want the credits to have fire when the names of the featured people in the video.

d)    Animation (can be Flash or stop motion)

I am going to use different cross dissolves to fade into different scenes for different parts of the music video. I also may use split screen to have more of an effect on the video.

Task 2: Attach your storyboard/ or shortlist here:

1st Scene outside a park. Close up of flowers on the parks fence, were the late friend had been killed. The camera then zooms out to show a picture of the boy who died. Side shot of people going to put flowers on the site. The close up sweep of everyone that has gone face, to show their emotions. Then the camera has a close up of the main characters face and then there is a flashback to when they all used to hang out with their late friend.

2nd Scene inside park on a sunny day, all the friends are playing football and chilling out on the grass, having a good time laughing with each other. Then the killed boy gets a call and says he has to go. Camera shots of the friends playing football close ups of the ball and distant shots of them playing football. When the phone rings there is a close up of the boy picking up his phone and talking. (He is talking to the man he is going to sell the drugs to.

3rd scene on a back road the boy goes to meet his customer and starts to argue with him about the price. Scene is dark camera angels of both boys walking up to each other over shoulder shot of customer with hoodie on and face covered. After the argument the dealer turns his back and the customer draws a knife and stabs the dealer in the back then stamps on him over shoulder shot of him stabbing and the far shot of customer running away.

4th Scene outside a black of flats. The main character is with his good friend. Full body shot of both friend and main character, close up of main character calling more of the gang to come down to the block to talk about something. Shortly after two of the gang turns up at the block. Shot of them walking down the street then half shot of them all greeting each other. They go to the off licence to purchase alcohol and cigarettes to chill and talk. Scene of them going into the shop and buying the products close up of alcohol and over shoulder shot of them buying them. They go back to the block to chill, drink and smoke close ups of the cups being poured and fags being smoked then far shot of everyone together. The fifth member of the gang then arrived on a mo ped and calls the main character to come talk to him near the motorcycle. Close up of them greeting each other then he presents a gun to the main character, which is stashed hidden in the peds seat. The main character takes the gun cocks it back and puts it in his waist.

5th Scene main character meets up with the friend who gave him the gun earlier in the movie. Full body shots of them meeting and walking down the road to the murder scene. It is dark cause its night, then the main character stops walking and stops his friend, close up of them talking, the main character has had second thoughts and decides not to go through with it, he hands back the gun and walks of.

Task 3: Produce with creativity and flair a music video using a full range of techniques and materials. Export the completed video to avi.

audition for Xfactor

evaluation of rush video

For this task myself and my group had to film a short sequence which was a boy band waiting to go for an audition on the Xfactor. We also were not allowed to edit or use final cut pro to edit out mistakes or sound etc so we had to get all the footage in the right order with no mistakes, we were also not allowed to do more then one shot so were not allowed to make no mistakes delete and do the scene again so it was quite a difficult task.

The advantages of using this method of making movies is that the footage is filmed very quickly and also without having to edit you can upload the film quickly, so using this method of filming saves allot of time because you don't have to bother with editing. Massive dis advantages to not being able to edit your filmed footage is when you are actually filming the footage it has to be done perfect so you cant make no mistakes because your not able to edit them out. Another dis advantage to not being able to edit is you cannot add or take out pieces of footage or audio so the film wont be the best possible filmed movie cause its all quite rushed and no editing makes it look very amateur.

I personally didn't like not being able to edit my footage because i felt the film could have been so much better and more effective with the use of editing. I also didnt like not being able to do more then one shot for each scene because i found it more difficult to make the video work.

Editing - the invisible arts

When a character is focused all his reactions etc and also the camera shows other shots of people and scenes which are fast and frequently shown to create an effective mood for the situation, different shots of all charters short shots to longer shots for close ups to long shots, this builds tension and pace.

Cross cutting is when two different scenes or actors are compared from different places, scenes the cross cuts displays both actors in different places doing individual things but we as the viewer get the idea of what they are aiming to do, tells two peoples story in the same amount of time and almost together.

Reaction shots are when a characters actions and others reactions are shot on the same scene back and forth so we as the viewer can see the reactions of the people watching and also the actions of the people which are provoking these reactions.

Seamless editing is when us as the viewer does not no what is going to happen next.
Our mind does not know what is going to happen next and keeps us as the viewer entertained and builds our expectations up about what is going to occur.

A Jump cut is a moment of discontinuity of an image or footage. This editing looks like a mistake but in fact its not, it quickly jumps from one piece of footage to another. the images are also shown whilst the voice or audio is still playing whilst different images are still going.

A flash back is when footage goes back in time and the person who experiences the flash back is reminiscing their past. This uses of editing achieves showing the persons past effectively and makes things easier to understand why the charters place is currently there at the present time. for example in a film called dead man shoes there are flash backs of the main charters disabled brother being bullied and abused by a group of people and later on the older brother gets his revenge on each person involved in the group.

Editing can be used poetically by using images and story line which can confuse the viewer and may not particularly have a specific meaning but can be interpreted as many different meanings to the scene.

Introduction to editing

Editing is a process of selecting different shots and footage, putting them together to tell a much more clearer story.

Elliptical editing is editing which allows you to fill in the missing gaps from a story line, it tells you a story without having to show visual images. This also speeds up the movie and saves allot of time.

non-diagetic is editing which involves sound, the sound is being played only for the viewer to hear and not for the character, which means we can hear it and not the actors it is usually put in film to build suspense and tension.

Long shots are used to show the characters surroundings, this also makes us as the viewer feel like we are there with the character.

We knew as the viewer that she was looking and bending down to pick up the ring because of the different use of effective shots. The camera shows the character looking down towards the ground then it cuts to a close up of her hand picking up the ring.

Over head shots are used to show and set out the space were the actors are siting and the scenery, shows who is part of this scene being shown to the viewer.

The camera cuts to the other members of the group to show they are all speaking and listening to each other.

Shot reverse shot shows a conversation between two people and the shot angels go back and forth displaying both characters individually speaking to each other.

Eye line matching is used to show two people which are displayed in a shot reverse shot angel are speaking to each other, so there eye contact is fixed but they are both not used in the shot.

Wipe is a slick transition which moves one scene to a completely different scene in a modern and good looking way.

The reason why the camera cuts and shows each person which is in the scene and part of the group are all members of the group and also that they are all speaking and listening to each other.

Name of Light - Key light

Function - This is the most important light out of all three of themm, the key light provides the set with the brightest light, which fills the room, this is also known as the primary light.

Position of light - The light usually shines from a 45 degree angel depending on space, and is also usualy located from the left had side.

Name of Light - Back light
